4.7 - QoS Fundamentals

Latency Reduction: Minimize delays for time-sensitive applications.

Jitter Control: Reduce variations in packet arrival times for streaming services.

Packet Loss Prevention: Ensure reliable delivery of packets, especially for critical data.


Why is QoS Important?


In modern networks, various applications compete for bandwidth—streaming media, VoIP calls, web browsing, file

transfers, and more. Without QoS, all traffic is treated equally, which can lead to:


Congestion: Excessive traffic overwhelming network capacity.

Poor Performance: Critical applications suffering from delays or interruptions.

Avoid Over-Prioritization: Be cautious not to prioritize too much traffic, which can negate the benefits of QoS.


Useful Commands:

Display QoS Configuration: show policy-map interface GigabitEthernet0/0

Check Class Maps: show class-map

Verify Policy Maps: show policy-map QOS-POLICY


Best Practices:


Identify Critical Traffic: Determine which applications require priority (e.g., VoIP, video conferencing).

Use QoS End-to-End: Ensure QoS policies are implemented throughout the network for consistency.

Avoid Over-Prioritization: Be cautious not to prioritize too much traffic, which can negate the benefits of QoS.

Test and Monitor: Regularly test QoS policies and monitor network performance to adjust as needed.
